Carmen gained a BSc in Biology and a PhD in Immunology at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. In 1991 she moved to Wales on a Wellcome Trust Travelling Fellowship and in 1997 she became Lecturer in Immunopharmacology in the Department of Pharmacology at Cardiff University. She is now a Reader and coordinates, develops and delivers the teaching of anti-microbial therapies, immunotherapies and vaccines to undergraduate pharmacology and undergraduate medical students at Cardiff University. Highlight in her research career is an international collaboration investigating the pathological mechanism of Loxosceles spider venom and investigating putative therapeutics to treat envenomations, which has led to a clinical trial.
